World No Tobacco Day 2022

World No Tobacco Day 2022

World No Tobacco Day is an annual awareness day taking place on the 31st of May. This year, the theme is “protect the environment”. The aim is to raise awareness regarding the environmental impact of tobacco – and give smokers another reason to quit.

Every year, the theme of World No Tobacco Day addresses a specific issue related to tobacco. The annual day is a perfect opportunity to bring awareness among the public on the environmental impact of tobacco, as well as promote smoking cessation. On this day, the WHO encourages smokers to go tobacco-free for 24-hours, in an effort to make every day a no tobacco day.

There are over 1 billion smokers worldwide. Most of us know how smoking harms our health – after all, cigarettes are the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the world. But smoking isn’t just a health issue; it’s also an environmental issue.

Even as the smoking rates have gone down, cigarette butts seem to be everywhere. So, it may come as no surprise that cigarettes are the most littered item on earth. Worldwide, cigarettes make up more than one-third of all collected litter. That is, about 4.5 trillion cigarettes are littered each year – accompanied by pouches, another product with littering challenges.

Many people believe that Swedish snus and nicotine pouches decay easily as tobacco is organic and can therefore be thrown away anywhere. However, pouches contain several substances which are not good for the environment and nature can’t decompose all components in snus.

What does all cigarette and pouch waste mean for the environment? Littered cigarette butts leach toxic chemicals, such as lead and arsenic, to name a few. As for Swedish snus and nicotine pouches, the pouches themselves are made of cellulose materials and do not decompose very easily. Fortunately, nicotine pouches do not contain as many harmful substances as cigarette butts, but they should always be disposed of correctly regardless.
