Moist & Dry Pouches: What's the Difference?

Not all nicotine pouches feel the same—and moisture is a big reason why. Here we explain what moisture does and how it compares across brands.

Key Takeaways

  • Moisture affects how pouches feel in the mouth and how they work.
  • A pouch’s moisture comes from both water and humectants like propylene glycol and glycerol, which help maintain texture and consistency.
  • When comparing products, total moisture matters more than water alone because it better reflects how a pouch feels and performs.
  • More moisture typically means a faster activation of nicotine; less moisture provides a more gradual release.
  • ZYN Ultra is the moistest product sold on Nicokick; Lucy Breakers is the driest (until the liquid-filled flavor capsule inside each pouch is popped).

What Does Moisture Do in Nicotine Pouches?

Moisture is what “activates” a nicotine pouch.

When you place a pouch under your lip, nicotine and flavor compounds need to dissolve before they can be absorbed. More moisture typically means that process starts a little faster.

In simple terms:

  • More moisture → faster release
  • Less moisture → slower, more gradual release

What Creates Moisture in a Pouch?

It’s not just water.

Moisture comes from a combination of water and humectants like propylene glycol and glycerol. Humectants are food-grade ingredients that attract and retain moisture, helping keep the pouch soft and stable over time.

In nicotine pouches, they:

  • Maintain texture
  • Prevent drying out
  • Support consistent performance

How We Compare Moisture Across Products

When we say one pouch is “more moist” than another, we don’t just look at water content. Humectants also matter!

Nicokick tests pouches for moisture, which includes:

  • Water
  • Propylene glycol (not used in all pouches)
  • Glycerol (not used in all pouches)

All 3 are measured as g/100 g. This means we can add the values together to come up with the percentage of moisture by pouch weight. This combined measure better reflects how a pouch actually feels and performs.

Moist vs Dry

Have you ever noticed how 2 pouches can have the same nicotine strength but feel different? The moisture level is one reason why.

There’s no single “best” option—it depends on your preference.

Understanding moisture will help you choose based on your preferred experience. Whether you like dry or moist, Nicokick has a product to suit your taste.

Here's how every nicotine pouch brand currently stocked on Nicokick* stacks up in terms of moisture content (looking at water + humectants):

However, moisture isn’t everything. For example, on! PLUS feels soft in the mouth because of its special pouch material, while Lucy Breakers have a capsule that can be activated to release additional moisture.

What a Clinical Study Found

A 2026 scientific publication from Swedish Match (the manufacturer of ZYN), examined dry and moist nicotine pouches in 2 clinical trials. The dry pouch was a 6mg classic ZYN, while the moist pouch was a 9mg ZYN Ultra.

The studies compared:

  • Dry pouches: 6mg nicotine per pouch with about 3% moisture
  • Moist pouches: 9mg nicotine per pouch with about 40% moisture

Participants used one pouch for 60 minutes in a controlled clinical setting. Researchers measured nicotine levels and also asked participants to rate their experience with the products.

Here’s the takeaway that may surprise you: even though ZYN Ultra had more nicotine per pouch, the overall nicotine exposure was similar between dry and moist products. The amount of nicotine extracted during use was also similar because a lower percentage of the nicotine was extracted from the moist pouches.

The studies also found that satisfaction followed a different pattern over time:

  • Moist pouches reached their highest satisfaction ratings earlier (around 12-30 minutes)
  • Dry pouches reached their highest satisfaction ratings later (around 30-45 minutes)

That does not mean the study proved one product is better than the other. These were 2 separate clinical trials, not a direct head-to-head test in the same group of participants. But the findings do show that pouch format and moisture level can affect the experience, even when overall nicotine exposure is similar.

FAQs

  • Not necessarily. Moist pouches can feel different because moisture may affect how quickly the pouch feels active, but that does not automatically mean a “stronger” product or higher total nicotine exposure. In some studies, total nicotine delivery has been similar between moist and drier pouches.
  • A dry pouch has low initial moisture and relies more on saliva for activation. This usually means a more gradual experience.
  • Because they contain different levels of water and humectants like propylene glycol and glycerol, which help retain moisture.
  • Moist nicotine pouches contain more total moisture, so they usually feel softer and create a more immediate, intense pouch experience. Dry pouches tend to feel firmer and may build more gradually.
  • They may have a faster initial release, depending on the product. Higher moisture can help the pouch contents dissolve sooner, which may contribute to a more immediate flavor and nicotine experience.
  • We compare pouches by total moisture, which includes water plus humectants like glycerol and propylene glycol. This gives a better sense of how a pouch will feel and perform in your mouth.
