New Gallup Poll: What it Says About the Consumption Habits of American Adults in 2026

New survey data show changes in reported adult use of cannabis, alcohol, cigarettes, vaping products, and nicotine pouches.

Gallup’s latest Consumption Habits poll^* reports how U.S. adults describe their use of several product categories. Cigarette smoking was reported by 11% of adult respondents; alcohol use was reported by 54%; marijuana smoking was reported by 17% while marijuana edible use was reported by 15%; vaping by 9%; and nicotine pouch use in the past week by 4%.

^*Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted by Recon MR July 1-19, 2026, with a random sample of 1,200 adults (aged 18 and older) living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. For results based on the sample of 701 adults who drink alcoholic beverages, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±5 percentage points. All reported margins of sampling error include computed design effects for weighting. Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 80% cellphone respondents and 20% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within region. Landline and cellular telephone numbers are selected using random-digit-dial methods. In addition to sampling error, question wording, and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

Gallup’s data should be read in the context of products that are legally restricted to adults, and youth access prevention remains essential. It is important to note that they surveyed adults were 18+, while the legal age for cannabis, alcohol, and nicotine purchases is 21+. 

Gallup’s data shows that several long-standing adult habits are moving in different directions.

Cigarette smoking has dropped to 11% (its lowest level on record), and alcohol use has also reached a record low. Meanwhile, marijuana smoking is now more common than cigarette smoking among U.S. adults: 17% report smoking marijuana (more than double the 7% recorded when Gallup first asked the question in 2013).

But the same poll also shows that many adults are choosing cannabis products that do not involve smoke. 15% of U.S. adults now say they consume marijuana edibles (up from 12% in 2024) and close to the share who smoke marijuana.

Gallup identified a gender gap in nicotine pouch use:

• • 7% of men use nicotine pouches;
  • 1% of women use nicotine pouches.

This aligns with our 2026 Nicotine Pouch Report, which surveyed Nicokick customers (all 21+) and found that men are much more represented among survey respondents than women (~90% vs ~10%).

Product preferences skew male:

• • Mint flavors dominate (nearly 60% of all cans sold);
  • Higher nicotine strengths are more popular among men.

This makes sense because many American males who currently use pouches, say they previously used smokeless tobacco and are accustomed to the oral format as well as mint flavors.

Meanwhile, woman tend to prefer:

• • Lower strength nicotine products;
  • Fruit and spice flavors.

Gallup’s data describe reported U.S. adult use across several product categories: cigarette smoking, alcohol use, marijuana smoking, marijuana edible use, vaping, and nicotine pouch use.

• • Fewer adults report drinking alcohol than in previous Gallup measures;
  • Fewer adults smoke cigarettes than ever before;
  • More adults report smoking marijuana than smoking cigarettes;
  • Many adults also consume marijuana edibles;
  • Some adults are beginning to use nicotine pouches.

Taken together, Gallup’s findings show a changing but complex picture of adult product use in the U.S. Clear, accessible information can help adult consumers interpret the differences between categories while recognizing that each product has distinct risks, restrictions, and evidence limitations.
